ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

A vital part of the program is the concept of providing our Veterans a platform to engage with our younger generation and showing them the value of service to our country and each other.

The Scholarship provides funds to an individual within a Veteran family who is enrolled in a ROTC program while attending a High School or Higher Education Institution in the United States.

STUDENT BIOGRAPHY

My name is Nicholas Grant Joynes. I am a junior at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, West Virginia. Education and learning are of utmost importance to me. I participate in several advanced placement classes and strive to maintain a high GPA. At the end of this educational term, I will complete my third year in the Air Force JROTC program. This program has been a wonderful preparatory experience for me as I plan to participate in a college ROTC program and later commission into the United States Armed Forces.

My instructors, Major Carpenter and Senior Eaton, have been pivotal in providing me with knowledge, training, and opportunities for growth and leadership. Because of my great respect and admiration for military personnel and being from a family where several generations have completed military service, serving my country is very important to me.

My school related extracurricular activities have included participation in Model UN, several years playing trumpet in the band, captain of the JROTC Raiders program, and 3 years on the swim team.  Because of my strong swim capabilities, I am working individually with my local YMCA to obtain my Lifeguard Certification. I have also been a member of Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in my community for around 3 years. In this program I have had the opportunity to attend several significant training experiences such as Encampment at Camp Dawson Army National Guard training facility and an Honor Guard Academy at Langley-Eustis Air Force Base.  I have completed several other trainings through the CAP as well including: General Emergency Services Training, Aircraft Ground Handling Training, and Introductory Communication User Training.  I also received the Commander’s Commendation Award for my wing in October 2019. My future educational plans are to apply to the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill where I will study political science. I intend to participate in the ROTC program while studying at UNC.

This program will assist in keeping my mind and body prepared for commissioning into the United States Armed Services after graduation. I do later hope to return to UNC’s School of Law to pursue a legal and political career.
